New Mexico Governor Lujan Grisham Recognizes National Clean Energy Week

August 30, 2019 — New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has issued a state proclamation recognizing September 23-27, 2019 as National Clean Energy Week in her home state.

In the proclamation, Gov. Lujan Grisham notes that New Mexico has wind and solar energy industries that employ more than 5,000 employees, “a natural gas industry that produces about 4 percent of the nation’s cleaner burning natural gas, and several other significant clean energy industries, including hydropower, geothermal energy, and energy storage.”

New Mexico is now the seventh state in the country to formally recognize National Clean Energy Week 2019. Recently, North Dakota Governor Doug BurgumVirginia Governor Ralph NorthamNew Hampshire Governor Christopher SununuIowa Governor Kim ReynoldsAlabama Governor Kay Ivey and Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt signed proclamations supporting NCEW in their home states.

EXECUTIVE OFFICE

Santa Fe, New Mexico

WHEREAS, the Energy Transition Act, which became law in 2019, established a statewide renewable energy standard of 50 percent by 2030 for New Mexico; and

WHEREAS, the new energy standard is expected to create more than 8,000 new jobs in New Mexico’s clean energy economy and stimulate over $4.6 billion of new investment; and

WHEREAS, New Mexico has wind and solar energy industries that employ more than 5,000 employees and generate nearly 2,600 megawatts; a natural gas industry that produces about 4 percent of the nation’s cleaner burning natural gas, and several other significant clean energy industries, including hydropower, geothermal energy, and energy storage; and 

WHEREAS, New Mexicans cherish their beautiful natural environment and recognize the imminent threat posed by global climate change; and 

WHEREAS, municipalities, organizations and individuals should be encouraged to integrate the cleanest lowest-emitting energy resources possible; the public and private sectors should be supported in further investment, research and development of our state’s clean energy resources; and 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Michelle Lujan Grisham, Governor of the State of New Mexico, do hereby proclaim September 23rd-27th, 2019, as:

“National Clean Energy Week” 

Throughout the State of New Mexico.
