September 16, 2019 — South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem has issued a state proclamation recognizing September 23-27, 2019 as National Clean Energy Week in her home state.
In the proclamation, Gov. Noem notes that in South Dakota “70 percent of electricity generated in the state came from renewable sources, 46 percent from hydroelectric power, and 24 percent from wind energy.”
South Dakota is now one of 17 states in the country to formally recognize National Clean Energy Week 2019. In 2018, a total of 29 governors, both Republican and Democratic, issued state proclamations declaring September 24-28, 2018 as National Clean Energy Week.

EXECUTIVE PROCLAMATION
OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR
STATE OF SOUTH DAKOTA
WHEREAS, the State of South Dakota supports an all-inclusive energy portfolio because affordable energy is the backbone of a strong economy; and
WHEREAS, clean energy is part of America’s energy future and includes generation from renewable sources such as hydro, solar, wind and geothermal, but it also includes natural gas and carbon capture technologies as well as energy storage; and
WHEREAS, South Dakota ranked sixth in the nation in ethanol production capacity in 2018, and accounted for seven percent of total U.S. fuel ethanol production; and
WHEREAS, in South Dakota, 70 percent of electricity generated in the state came from renewable sources, 46 percent from hydroelectric power, and 24 percent from wind energy; and
WHEREAS, in South Dakota, wind power has contributed over $2.2 billion in capital investment for the construction and maintenance of wind projects now in operation, which supports over 2,000 good-paying jobs; and
WHEREAS, we must harness the power of South Dakota’s entrepreneurs and small businesses and promote government collaboration to ensure South Dakota and the United States continue to lead with energy in the global marketplace and provide low-cost, reliable energy here at home; and
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Kristi Noem, Governor of the State of South Dakota, do hereby proclaim September 23-27, 2019 as
NATIONAL CLEAN ENERGY WEEK
in South Dakota.
