Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer Recognizes Clean Energy Week 2024
LANSING, Mich.– For the sixth year in a row, Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D-Mich.) has officially proclaimed September 23-27, 2024, as Clean Energy Week in Michigan. This proclamation was issued in conjunction with the 8th Annual National Clean Energy Week (NCEW).
“I commend Governor Whitmer for recognizing Clean Energy Week in Michigan,” said Heather Reams, chair of NCEW. “Advancing clean energy projects across the country is not only good environmental stewardship, but it is also economically prudent as it spurs the creation of jobs in local communities and strengthens state economies all while providing affordable, reliable clean energy to residents. Governor Whitmer understands this, and I am encouraged by Michigan’s potential to lead the rest of the nation in clean energy innovation and investment.”
“Across Michigan, clean and readily abundant forms of energy are powering more homes and businesses than ever before,” Governor Whitmer stated in the proclamation. “Clean energy jobs are inherently local and contribute to the growth of local economies, and these jobs cannot be outsourced due to on-site nature of construction, installation and maintenance.”
As Governor Whitmer’s proclamation highlights, Michigan is home to the Lundington Pumped Storage Facility, one of the largest pumped hydroelectric power plants in the world, with more than 2,000 megawatts of capacity. In addition, the clean energy and energy efficiency sector employs over 119,600 people in the state.
Last year, Governor Whitmer was among the 37 governors and 49 municipalities that issued proclamations to recognize Clean Energy Week. Learn more about the state proclamations here.
