Joe Schatz is deputy editor-in-chief of POLITICO, where he leads the publication’s energy and environment coverage across North America and oversees other key expansion efforts. He previously served as executive editor of POLITICO’s North American newsroom, overseeing Washington, congressional and state coverage, and drove the company’s growth in state capitals across the U.S., including its expansion in California. Schatz joined POLITICO to launch its tax policy team after nearly a decade covering economic policy on Capitol Hill during the George W. Bush and Obama years for Congressional Quarterly, where he received the National Press Club’s Sandy Hume Award. He’s done two stints as a foreign correspondent — reporting from Myanmar for The Washington Post, Christian Science Monitor and Al Jazeera America from 2013-15 and covering politics and business in Zambia and Southern Africa for the Associated Press from 2006 to 2008.
